A randomish note in tractate Nazir 34a: the koy. An animal that is speculated to be one of the following:
- off spring of a he-goat and a hind
- a distinct species, not a hybrid
- unknown if it is a domesticated animal (בהמה) or a wild animal (חיה).
- it is indeed kosher
The implication in this Gemara revolves around a “bet” about becoming a nazir if a particular unknown animal is of a determinate type, but more importantly if the koy is domesticated or wild dictates how it is eaten and killed. Domesticated animals have forbidden fats and blood does not need to be covered when killed. Wild animals have no prohibitions on fats and need to have their blood covered. This is amongst many other detailed differences between them. Oh the koy, what are you??
