Daf Yomi

Letter to NJ Senator on Marriage Equality

I am a tax paying, job holding, voting, G-d fearing, red blooded, educated, Jewish American male.

I am also gay.

I also believe in the separation of Church and state. I believe that in a modern secular democracy G-d has no business in the actions of the government.

I also believe that the says I have the right to expect my government to do what can to protect me as a minority from the tyranny of the majority.

I would never presume that bread couldn’t be sold on Passover, businesses should be closed on Shabbat or no pork should be sold in the state on NJ. If I were to posit this most people, including my fellow Jews, would consider me a bit off.

Moreover, if I were to replace the words “gay”, “homosexual” or “same sex” in recent statements and news articles with “African American”, “Asian” or “Latino” and read them out loud to you and your families you would be horrified. In fact, I might even be assaulted if I performed this action on the street corner. This simple test underscores the fact that this isn’t about anything other than equal civil rights.

Please do what is brave, what is right, what is needed: give all NJ residents the same civil rights!

Marriage equality matters. You wouldn’t like to be treated as a second class citizen. You wouldn’t want you kids to be treated that way.

So do not treat me that way.
