You read that saltwater tank setup are complicated. At this point in owning one I would tend to agree. I am impressed with the level of integrated products that have come to market, but there is a real need out there for something that you just plug in and is easy to maintain.
For about 12 years I have been running saltwater tanks and my hope here is that this will help jump start some of you out there and help you avoid making mistakes that I have made.
There certainly are wonderful alternates to many of the products that I have listed below. So you can take this as the gist, you will more or less need some kind of most everything I have listed here.
Take a lot of what you read on the web with a grain of salt – lots of people have no clue what they are talking about and others seem bent on scaring people off the hobby. It is an intense and expensive hobby, no doubt, but if you are willing to dedicate the hours a week to it, like you should with any serious hobby, it can be very rewarding.
A list of the components of my setup:
- Tank & Stand – Oceanic Tech Series 90 Gal with matching stand
- 48″ BlueLine Aurora HQI/T5 Lighting System
- Sump & Skimmer – CPR Sump
- Pump
- UV Sterilizer – Aqua UV sterilizer
- Chiller
- Refill
- Filer Media – PolyFilter, Algone
- Sump Lamp
- Timers
- Check Valve & Plumbing
- Camera – Axis
- UPS – MINUTEMAN UPS ETR700 This was a revelation for me this upgrade cycle! I bought a vastly over powered UPS to run my main pump during power failures. We do not have many here in Hoboken, but now I should be ok for hours just in case.
